Released 100 years to the day since the outbreak of World War One, this app is a travel guide to the battlefields of the Somme area. It contains over 200 locations with colour photographs and expertly researched information, and another 700 accurately mapped locations - all specific to World War One.It's designed for anyone with an interest in the area, whether you're actually visiting, planning a visit, or just want to be able to zoom over the battlefields in the comfort of your own home. It's designed for everyone from armchair enthusiasts right through to Battlefield Guides and professional military researchers.
Using your devices GPS, each location is viewable on one of four different map views, and coloured icons make it easy to identify cemeteries, memorials, museums, visitors' centres, accommodation and even battlefield remains that are still visible today. Filters make it easy to narrow down locations on the map views to find exactly what you are looking for.
While the map tiles are on-line only (due to Google's map caching policy), the app is designed to be just as useful when used off-line. All the photographs and descriptions are available off-line, and GPS is not required to be enabled to use the app.
Every described location has been visited personally by the app development team within the last two years, so the professionally taken photographs are up to date and the location has been verified. There are many locations that have been visited in the summer of 2014, which will be added to the app over the next few months.
Further information on the locations includes, for example for cemeteries, details of casualties buried here, as well as identifying any graves of note (such as Victoria Cross winners, War Poets, or those Shot at Dawn). Museums and Visitors' Centres includes contact details, opening times and admission prices.
This app is invaluable for anyone with a serious interest in World War One.
